Wendy Gaybba: “From an early stage, I had a hunger for expressing my observations and surroundings through art – finding something meaningless and transforming it into a worthy object – rediscovering the beauty in what has been forgotten – the appreciation of the small things that seem insignificant. For me, being an artist, requires laying bare one’s personal truth, with all its seasons and volatility. Observing life and lives, with all its complexities, fears, ecstasies and treasures; turning it into a work of art.”

“I am a person that has always been drawn to psychology, whether related to humans or animals or philosophy. Creativity is second nature to me, but also letting people see the uniqueness in themselves and to encourage them to embrace the beauty within. The medium I use is oil paint, but I also work with mixed mediums.”

In the words of Avril Gardiner which I believe is a good summary of my career to date: “Gaybba has always been an artist doing her own thing in her own time, and she participated in six two-person and 32 group exhibitions since then (including a group show at the Pretoria Art Gallery as a finalist in the Sasol New Signatures Competition in 2005) and under the top 100 artworks during the Sanlam Portrait competition and finalist in the Tollman Bouchard Finlayson Competition, before having her first solo.”

“In 2013 she decided to fly solo with a large solo exhibition titled ‘I recall a gypsy woman’ in the Liebrecht Gallery in Somerset West. Her work has a poetic quality to it since she uses the entries and poems in her diary which she carries around on her wanderings as reference material. From time to time she also incorporates some text in her work.”
