SUMMARY:Night Mares in Paradise - Elmarie van Straten
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Grande Provence Presents \n \nA Solo Exhibition by Elmarie van Straten  \n  \n\n\nJoin us for the opening at The Gallery at Grande Provence\nSaturday\, the 26h of October 2024 at 11:00. \n\nThis exhibition explores the duality of the world we inhabit\, often seen as a divine paradise. However\, upon closer inspection\, subtle hints of a dystopian reality emerge—an undercurrent of crime and unsettling tension. What initially appears idyllic begins to reveal darker shadows\, especially when we pause and linger too long. \nThe “Mares” in the title symbolizes horses grazing in an otherworldly utopia\, yet not entirely of this world. As you observe\, the imperfections within the seeming perfection slowly come into view. \nRequest Catalogue \n  \nSat 26th of October – 30 November 2024\nEnquiries: gallery@grandeprovence.co.za

SUMMARY:Francke Gretchen Crots
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Grande Provence Presents \n‘threatening auras’ \na solo exhibition by Francke Gretchen Crots \n\n\nJoin us for the opening at The Gallery at Grande Provence\nSaturday\, the 4th of November 2023 at 11h00 AM. \n\nThe Urban Dictionary describes having a “threatening aura” as a place\, person or object that evokes in one a sense of uneasiness; a feeling of danger that arises\, simply by holding it/them in one’s gaze. \nThe objects presented in this exhibition are not necessarily intended to threaten the viewer – but rather to threaten or even challenge rules of conduct that dictate how people are expected to behave in a particular society\, rules such as femininity and masculinity\, identity\, morality\, authority and even tradition. These threats can be interpreted through the use of profanities\, sayings and opinions interwoven throughout the body of works – words and languaging that do not necessarily align with that of mainstream conventions. \nRequest Catalogue \nSat 4th of November – 26 November 2023\nEnquiries: gallery@grandeprovence.co.za

SUMMARY:KRX
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Grande Provence Presents\nKRX\nan exhibition of Select Works / 2013 – 2023 by Krisjan Rossouw \n\n\nJoin us for the opening at The Gallery at Grande Provence\nSunday\, the 19th of February at 11h00 AM. \n\nOver the last decade\, South African fine art photographer Krisjan Rossouw has established himself globally for his unmistakably distinct approach to contemporary portraiture that celebrates the beauty\, strength and resilience of Africa and her people. \nSelf-taught\, with no formal art or photographic study\, Rossouw developed his unique chiaroscurist photographic technique from continued experimentation with non-traditional light sources\, mixing and layering luminance and temperature to capture his striking models from the African continent and diaspora. \nThis year marks the 10th anniversary of Rossouw’s practice since his debut solo exhibition\, Dark Paradise in 2013. His body of work has since grown to include eight photographic projects and collaborations\, solo and group exhibitions and art fairs worldwide\, and a growing collector’s base that includes The United States\, Canada\, England\, Ireland\, Scotland\, France\, Spain\, Portugal\, Italy\, The Netherlands\, Switzerland\, Sweden\, China\, Japan\, Australia\, New Zealand\, United Arab Emirates\, Germany\, Belgium\, Denmark\, Norway\, Russia\, Mauritius and across Africa. \nKRX at The Gallery at Grande Provence\, Franschhoek\, is Rossouw’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. The select works on show represent a capsule retrospective of the artist’s practice over the last decade\, along with some as yet un-exhibited works and a preview of his current ongoing 2023 project\, Obscura. \nView Complete Catalogue (Large File) \nSun 19 February – 19 March 2023\nEnquiries: gallery@grandeprovence.co.za

SUMMARY:ABOUT TIME
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Grande Provence Presents\nABOUT TIME\na group exhibition. \n\n\nJoin us for the opening at The Gallery at Grande Provence\nSaturday\, the 24th of September at 11h00 AM. \n\nSix of the artists studied fine art together at Rhodes University. Professor Marais was their first-year teacher. 1981\, their year of enrolment\, was an “interesting” time. Art was evolving from a formal orientation towards a socially relevant view and the political climate was fraught with the tensions of a civil war. 40 years have passed\, each artist has explored and advanced their unique and different approach. Now\, they are established and have works in collections throughout South Africa and across the world. \nRecently\, these artists wondered what homogeneity remains and what diversity has developed from their common origin. To explore this\, the artists decided that it was time to exhibit together once again. \nView Catalogue here \nJoin us for a glass of wine at the opening on Saturday 24th of September 2022 at 11:00 am.

SUMMARY:RAPTURE - QUANTUM LEAP INTO THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:Having spent a lifetime creating solid forms that inhabit space but that don’t express time\, I started investigating the possibility of expressing time and rhythm and took a quantum leap into pure expression\, employing line in 3D with hand-cut steel – achieving the staccato\, the beat\, and the metronomic progression of time in interpenetrated forms. Dissolving\, marching to a different drumbeat\, visionary\, and almost prophetic\, you can see the future through them. It’s as if your own shadow is entangled in their creation. \n \n  \nThe Gallery at Grande Provence proudly presents RAPTURE – QUANTUM LEAP INTO THE FUTURE – a solo exhibition by artist Anton Smit \n\n\nRead .pdf of artist statement here. \nPlease join us for a glass of wine and the opening on Saturday 28th November 2020 at 12:00. \nWalkabout with Anton Smit – 29th November. \n

SUMMARY:Painterly - Curated by Aidon Westcott
DESCRIPTION:The Gallery at Grande Provence is hosting ‘Painterly’\, an exhibition showcasing the essence of paint itself. ‘Painterly’\, curated by Aidon Westcott\, presents art pieces created with oils which have been smeared thickly onto the canvas in their voluptuous\, rich state. These works\, by renowned South African artists are unprocessed and fresh\, with expressive brush marks and unblended colours. This approach is a creative departure from the traditional practice of creating a realistic and refined picture that seeks to hide the painting process\, even though this process defines the final product. Head down to the wine estate’s gallery in Franschhoek to experience this flourishing exhibition for yourself. The exhibition will be running from Saturday\, 9 September until Saturday\, 30 September 2017. \nAidon Westcott is an experienced curator\, as well as an artist who primarily creates mixed media pieces. He works independently\, as well as for galleries such as D-Street Gallery\, Art in the Yard Gallery and Moor Gallery in the Cape Winelands. ‘Painterly’\, is an exhibition that Aidon will be showcasing independently. He has chosen artworks by a wide selection of passionate and contemporary artists\, who have also been featured in other galleries and exhibitions\, as well as famous annual art festivals including Solo Studios in Riebeek-Kasteel\, the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown\, Wordfees in Stellenbosch and more. The Gallery at Grande Provence’s Estate is the ideal venue for such a delightful group exhibition\, situated in vineyard country. \nIt will be well worth visiting the ‘Painterly’ exhibition which opens at 11:00am on the 9th of September. Grande Provence will be treating guests to glasses of their signature ‘Angels Tears’ wines\, named after the legendary wine so delicious that it has been said that angels wept when tasting it. This is an extremely popular brand of Grande Provence’s famous wines; the various red\, white and rosé wines in this collection are simply heavenly. \nARTISTS FEATURING IN THE ‘PAINTERLY’ GROUP EXHIBITION AT GRANDE PROVENCE \n• Eric Duplan\n• Anton Karstel\n• Paula van Coller\n• Jenny Parsons\n• Adrian Owen\n• Jan Schutte\n• Hannes van Zyl\n• Bretten-Anne Moolman\n• Marinda Combrinck\n• Cedric Vanderlinden\n• Annelie Venter\n• Lori Schappe-Youens\n• Greta McMahon\n• Jonathan Silverman\n• Wendy Gaybba\n• Cobus van Bosch\n• Diane McLean\n• Estelle Marais\n• Isabella Kuijers\n• Jaco Roux\n• Liza Littlewort\n• Mathew Brittan\n• Olaf Bischoff \nENTRY TO THE 2017 ‘PAINTERLY’ ART EXHIBITION AT GRANDE PROVENCE WINE ESTATE

SUMMARY:Broke-whole the labor-oratory of Dr Kali
DESCRIPTION:Broke-Whole opens an aperture on the mysteries of life through the lens of death. On the surface is the broken\, scarred\, partially decayed state of things\, beyond is a search for deeper unity\, synthesis and wholeness. The whole is never static\, nor final but is in a state of becoming. \nPlease join us for the opening on 16 JULY 2017 in Franschhoek. \nIn the death dioramas\, chance meetings\, strange contortions\, couplings\, conjunctions and fusions take place. The drama speaks to deathly beauty\, the miraculous\, ecstatic\, deformed\, transformed and sometimes the monstrous. \nThese works speak to a re-interpretation of the museum specimen\, guided by plays of imagination rather than organised by any reason. Personal history is fused with natural history so the observer becomes part of the observed. \nIn the encounter of extended photographic observation\, a bonding takes place between myself and the specimens. I find myself desiring more than the light fixed memory of a photograph. I preserve the physical remains of the dead forms\, a relic of a moment of attachment – the love I feel for each and every creature and plant that comes under my scrutiny. \nTime pulls everything apart. All form will end in fragmentation\, degradation\, ruination\, and destruction with the passing of the seasons. There is human hubris in trying to hold things together\, to re-arrange and re-animate them. \nDeath creates renewal for the dying of the old makes space and is sustenance for the new. Death is to be welcomed and honoured\, not feared\, for it is an integral part of the intelligent whole.

SUMMARY:ARS GRATIA ARTIS
DESCRIPTION:EXHIBITION: ‘ARS GRATIA ARTIS’ VENUE: THE GALLERY AT GRANDE PROVENCE OPENING: 15 JULY till 3 SEPTEMBER 2017 \nThe phrase ‘art for art’s sake’ condenses the notion that art has its own value and should be judged apart from any themes which it might touch on\, such as morality\, religion\, history\, or politics. It teaches that judgements of aesthetic value should not be confused with those proper to other spheres of life. The idea has ancient roots\, but the phrase first emerged as a rallying cry in 19th century France\, and subsequently became central to the British Aesthetic movement. Although the phrase has been little used since\, its legacy has been at the heart of 20th century ideas about the autonomy of art\, and thus crucial to such different bodies of thought as those of formalism\, modernism\, and the avant-garde. Today\, deployed more loosely and casually\, it is sometimes put to very different ends\, to defend the right of free expression\, or to appeal for art to uphold tradition and avoid causing offense \nFEATURED ARTISTS:\nAnton Karstel\, Aidon Westcott\, Corlie de Kock\, Adrian Owen\, Jan Schutte\, Henk Serfontein\, Bretten Anne Moolman\, Marinda Combrinck\, Cedric Vanderlinden\, Lori Schappe-Youens\, Manyaku Mashilo\, Michele Davidson\, Isabella Kuijers\, Helena Hugo\, Annelie Venter\, Strijdom van der Merwe\, Jaco Roux\, Paul Birchall\, Mark Chapman\, Jess Holdengarde\, Wendy Gaybba\, Riaan van Zyl\, Anton Brink\, Adele Van Heerden\, Jenny Ord\, Mathew Brittan\, Kennett Sinclair\, Leandri Ekland\, Antoinette Cloete\, Anthony Harris\, Leanne Olivier\, Marieke Kruger

SUMMARY:Andries Botha Solo exhibition - BEING HERE(and there)
DESCRIPTION:ANDRIES BOTHA SOLO EXHIBITION – BEING HERE (and there) \nWhen I was young and wondering what it would be like not to be what everyone wanted me to be\, unpredictable thoughts became ideas\, and then my life. The idea that took shape instantly\, in immediate and unpredictable circumstances\, was that I imagined myself as a sculptor\, when I did not even know what sculpture was. I saw a picture of Michelangelo’s slaves lying on my friends coffee table and asked “…what is this?”. “Sculpture\, my mother loves this stuff“\, he said. “I am going to do that “\, I said. So that’s the story of my art career; an illogical necessity that keeps upsetting everyone\, but me. \nIn-between the what\, the how and the why not\, hovers a much longer story\, eventually leading me to 2016 and this exhibition with Trent Read. \nI was in the familiar space of changing my mind\, retreating from the public eye into my own private space\, when Trent showed up at my Durban studio. He saw some of my older work\, which I was in the process of cleaning and restoring\, along with some new drawings and offered me a show. The journey from the private into the public has always been scary. Exposing the intimate as a form of public intent\, subject to market force and critical commentary can become a perilous dance. I confess I have always been wary of this\, shying away from normal commercial gallery leylines. \nMost of my major works were made as part of my own meditation on self within the frightening or \nchallenging South African space. I exhibited (mostly abroad) as part of larger group shows\, then crated and stored the (hidden again) work. Still not sure what all this means but I sort of understand my life of creativity as a embodiment of this ambivalence or uncertainty. Making sculpture and then not sure how or where to show it\, or if I should at all…\,creating the work and making more… \nNow I have all this work which speaks of 40 years of sculpture making. And some other stuff\, all neatly stored away. Strange when you look at your life in this way and realise it’s peculiarity… \nThe works do speak for themselves and have their narratives secretly woven into them. Speaking or analysing your intent flattens the work and destroys the subtlety and mystery of everything. This is the viewers work. Upon reflection\, I return to similar concerns and merely express them differently. I soon learnt that material and mode of construction was as important as the ideas that were being explored. \nI try to locate the human(ity) within the visceral\, social and cultural spectacle. The complex South African context unashamedly frames the universal human experience. Mine as well. It is difficult to imagine \nexpressing myself in any other way. \nI am going to show 4 major works that frame a history of art making\, a sort of love affair in a time line\, if you wish. In addition there will be about 10 large digital prints and 3 multi media Marquette’s\, or three dimensional drawings. \nI am pleased to be back in the private contemplative space. Yes\, I am hesitant to be journeying into the public again\, but happy I am doing it with Trent. So I come into another circle/cycle. \nInteresting how life is…
